Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar Minister of Industry and Primary Resources who also is Chairman for Brunei Tourism Board officiates the 1st Brunei Darussalam Nature Festival / 1st Borneo Bird Race 2013 today at Dermaga Diraja, Bandar Seri Begawan today. Also present during the opening ceremony are the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, the Deputy Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Heads of departments and senior officials from the ministry and diplomatic corps of the respective participating bird clubs. Organised by Tourism Development Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources together with Sakam Enterprise Sdn Bhd and other relevant stakeholders, this 4-day event which is open to the public from the 31st May to the 3rd June 2013 will take place at the Dermaga Diraja. The aim of the festival is to create awareness among the general public and especially the youths on the importance of protecting and conserving our beloved nature; which includes our flora, fauna as well as our wild life both on land and under water. The various activities planned during the 4-day festival includes awareness roadshows from Government Agencies and clubs/societies related to nature, nature talks and presentations, a photo gallery exhibition, basic photography workshops, quizzes and field trips.

The event which coincides with the opening ceremony for the 1st Borneo Bird Race 2013 is co-organized with the Sandakan Borneo Bird Club and Asia Memories Sdn Bhd will also witness the launch of a new promotional brochure entitled Bird Watching in Brunei. This brochure corresponds with this years BDNF’s theme “Bird Watching Tourism in Brunei Darussalam”. The Bird Race is a competition where 8 participating bird clubs from all over Asia travel for more than 1,000 kilometres in search of over 400 species of birds in a wide range of habitats from the coastal regions, freshwater swamps, lowland forests, to the hills and mountain ranges of Sabah and Brunei. At the end of the day, each team will enjoy the beauty of this land as they count the numbers of recorded species, and the longest list shall earn the prestigious “Bornean Bristlehead Cup”. This race starts from Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei Darussalam then will continue to Kinabalu Park and will conclude at the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok, Sabah where the 5th Borneo Bird Festival is simultaneously held.
