A dinner hosted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources to welcome all professional golf players, invited speakers and invited guests to the Kingdom of Unexpected Treasures at the Royal Berkshire Hall, Royal Brunei Polo and Riding Club Brunei. The dinner was also held in conjunction with the presentation of the “Inaugral Custodian of the Environment Award” to honor golf courses in the Asia Pacific that incorporate sustainable practices in their operation.

A way of moving forward is for golf course designers, owners, and operators to become more aware of environmental issues. The industry gate-keepers need to promote more responsible environmental stewardship and innovative and green ways of building and maintaining golf courses.  Thus, the initiative by Asia Pacific Golf Summit (APGS) to launch ‘Inaugral Custodians of the Environment Award”, which gives recognition to golf courses in Asia Pacific for their efforts in transforming environmentally sustainable golf facilities and community to encourage development. This first award is presented to the TAT Filipinas Golf and Country Club.

The “Inaugural Custodian of the Environment Award” award is sponsored by the Government of Brunei Darussalam by the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources and is endorsed by the International Sustainability Council. This year’s APGS focuses on environmental sustainability of golf not only a sport but can also be a responsible partner in the protection and sustainability of the environment.

Also present at the event was Mr. I Gde Pitana, Deputy Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Resources Development, Republic of Indonesia and Mr Ronald Dodson, Chairman of the International Sustainability Council.

The TAT Filipinas Golf Club was founded in 1962 and was designed by Seiichi Inoue, one of Japan’s best golf course architects. Under the helmanship of Edna Selloriquez Pana, the corporate counsel of the TAT Group of companies, TAT Filipinas Golf Club started the transformation of the club into a sustainable golf course not only with a clear mission to serve its members but also an awareness of its role in the community and environment.

Brunei Tourism is the Tourism Development Department in Brunei’s Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, in charge of the international promotion and marketing of Brunei as a tourism destination of choice, acting as secretariat and executor of Brunei Tourism Board’s mandate.
