Plain of Jars

The Plain of Jars in Xieng Khouang | Visit Southeast Asia

Harkening back to the Iron Age, the Plain of Jars is a fascinating attraction nestled in the enchanting heart of Lao PDR. Mystical and enigmatic, this archaeological site is a testament to the long history of the human population and the rich cultural heritage of Lao PDR. The Plain of Jars is located in the province of Xieng Khouang, a mountainous plateau closely linked with the ancient Tai Phuan people.

The attraction is made up of thousands of stone jars scattered across foothills and valleys, ranging in size from small urns to massive monoliths. More than 90 sites are home to these stone jars, and they have intrigued archaeologists, historians, and adventure-seekers alike for generations.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the mysterious Plain of Jars has inspired many theories. The most commonly accepted explanation for their existence is that they served as an Iron Age burial site; human remains have been found in and around many of the jars. The scattering of jars follows ancient trade routes and important mining sites, contributing to the idea that they were significant to Iron Age settlements.

Despite the unique wonder of the Plain of Jars, it has not yet reached the same level of worldwide recognition as similar stone sites like the Easter Island moai or Stonehenge. That doesn’t mean that it is not a must-visit destination for intrepid travellers with an appetite for cultural discovery.

The closest town to the plain is Phonsavan, which can be reached by plane or bus from Lao PDR’s major cities; once you get to the town, there are countless tours (or even motorbike rentals!) that will get you to the jar sites.

Whether or not you choose to take a guided tour, you will discover insights into the archaeological significance of the Plain of Jars and deepen your appreciation for the long history of Lao PDR.

Champasak Cultural Landscape

Vat Phou, part of the Champasak Cultural Landscape | Visit Southeast Asia

Home to one of Asia’s oldest places of worship, the Champasak Cultural Landscape is a hidden gem that transports visitors back to a more ancient time. The temple complex — called Vat Phou — and the other ancient settlements within the southern province of Champasak have earned it a place on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Vat Phou is the jewel of Champasak’s treasure trove of cultural wonders. With structures dating back to the second century BCE and a landscape full of buildings constructed more than a millennium ago, Vat Phou is a Hindu temple from Khmer Empire times that represents the country’s rich cultural past. It is famed for its verdant natural landscape, well-preserved traditional architecture, and representation of Hindu philosophies of the important connection between humans and nature.

But Vat Phou is just one part of the rich Champasak cultural landscape. Surrounding it are the ruins of other ancient settlements, including cities that date back to the 5th century. The town of Champasak, too, is worth visiting. Champasak is a great base for explorations in the region, full of French colonial architecture, Buddhist temples, and bustling charm.

A visit to Champasak and Vat Phou promises an unforgettable dive into Lao PDR’s cultural tapestry.
